When the Supreme Court decides a case, each justice may assume one of a number of roles in the outcome. A justice might join with the majority, dissent, choose not to participate, or take a number of other actions. Use this tool to see how many times a justice took each of the various roles in all cases in which he or she participated. Opinion Writing

When the Supreme Court decides a case, it typically issues one or more written opinions explaining the ruling. These opinions can be in support of the majority of justices or can express dissenting views of the minority. This tool reports how many opinions of various types (majority, concurring, dissenting, etc.) a specific justice wrote over the course of his or her career. Use this tool to select a justice and then select "find opinions." Select one or more topic areas to further refine your results. Opinion Alignment

When the Supreme Court decides a case, it typically issues one or more written opinions explaining the ruling. These opinions can be in support of the majority of justices or can express dissenting views of the minority. This tool analyzes how many times one justice joined with the written opinion of another. The search yields two sets of results, each set giving the number of times one justice joined the other’s written opinion. Voting Bloc Analysis

Analyze how justices, or groups of justices ("blocs"), vote with or against each other. Once you select the first justice from the drop-down menu, a new selection box will appear with the names of justices who served with the first member you selected. You may than narrow the results to show cases pertaining to specific areas or topics, if desired. The search results provide the number of times the bloc of justices selected were together in the majority and the number of times they were together in the minority, or the number of times the selected bloc of justices voted against each other. This query includes all cases decided from 1941 to the current term.
