The view that the state is run for the benefit of everyone is losing popularity in many countries, according to polling by the Pew Research Center. In Italy, the proportion holding this view fell from 88 percent in 2002 to 30 percent last year. In the same period, the share in the United States dropped from 65 percent to 46 percent.
