Peace Corps' Challenges in the 1990s

Introduction

March 1 marks the 30th anniversary of the Peace Corps, and by many measures, the agency is more popular today than it ever has been. Congress has encouraged it to expand to 10,000 volunteers, and Peace Corps programs are being established in more countries, including several in Eastern Europe. Nonetheless, the agency still faces problems of funding and recruiting as it enters its fourth decade.
