Introduction
Cigarette companies are under growing pressure from adverse court rulings, restrictive legislation and negative public attitudes toward smoking. So far, however, the industry has been able to maintain high profits by raising prices and increasing sales abroad. And although its tactics have changed, the industry continues to wage fierce battles in the courts, in the legislatures and in the arena of public opinion. Nevertheless, there are some signs of serious difficulties ahead.
