Report Outline
Special Focus
Introduction
The sweltering, polluted summer of '88 seems to have put it all in focus: The Earth is in danger from the greenhouse effect, the ozone hole, air pollution, water pollution—the list is endless. Something must be done, and it must be done soon. But which problems are the most serious? And which ones should we tackle first? How much time do we have to act? And how much must we pay?

Overview
The Problems
The winter's chill may now be in the air, but few will quickly forget the summer of 1988. Record-breaking heat scorched cities across the nation, the sick and the elderly were warned to stay inside away from life-threatening smog, and vacationers steered clear of beaches littered with AIDS-infected medical waste. Scientists warned that a global warming trend and depletion of the planet's protective ozone layer threatened our very survival. Their words seemed prophetic as the season wore on. Erratic weather caused drought in the Midwest and forest fires throughout the West, floods in Bangladesh and a killer hurricane in the Caribbean.
“I think this society crossed a perceptual threshold this summer,” says Lester R. Brown, president of Worldwatch Institute, a Washington-based think tank that focuses on global environmental problems. “The issues have moved beyond the hard-core environmental community into the mainstream.” |
