Possible Effects on the Electorate of Farm Depression and Negro Migration

Since 1920 when the recession of prices for farm products cast many farm producers into bankruptcy, farm mortgages have been foreclosed, evicting the original holders. Curtailed production and financial prostration of farmers have reduced their ability to hire farm hands, thus reducing employment in the affected communities. Unprofitable production has driven many tenants to abandon their acres.

In many such cases, farmers, farm laborers and farm tenants have been compelled to remove from their accustomed domiciles. Many have gone to cities; others have sought farmlands in other sections.

Beginning earlier but continuing through this period there has occurred an unprecedentedly heavy migration of Negroes from the south to northern states.
