Introduction

Multiple-drug “cocktails” have transformed the once-deadly HIV infection into a manageable chronic condition for many people. Last year, AIDS fell out of the top 10 causes of death in the U.S. for the first time since 1990. But the news about AIDS isn't all positive. While the new treatments allow some infected people to live longer, they don't actually cure the disease, they have unpleasant side effects and can cost upward of $15,000 per year. Some activists and health officials worry that the heartening news is giving rise to complacency and a perception that the epidemic is over.
