Acid Rain: New Approach to Old Problem

Introduction

As the United States sails toward the 21st century, it is setting a new course on acid rain—the deadly precipitation that results from airborne pollutants. Last November, President Bush signed into law a Clean Air Act that offers industries financial incentives to reduce the emissions that cause acid rain. Industry officials and environmentalists are closely watching to see how this market-based approach works, because it may be useful in attacking other environmental problems.
