Outstanding Roll Calls in the Senate

Leading roll calls in the Senate during the second session of the 77th congress (January 5–December 16, 1942) are given in full, in geographical arrangement, in the table which occupies the four following pages. Political alignments in these and other important roll calls are shown below.

The closest votes in the Senate were ties (broken in each case by the Vice President) on continuing the C. C. C. for another year, authorizing the Florida ship canal, and requiring Senate confirmation of appointments to places in the O. C. D. with salaries of $4500 or more a year.

Outstanding Roll Calls in the House

In striking contrast with the first session of the 77th Congress, before the United States entered the war, the second session produced only a few close contests in the House. At the 1941 session the 18 month draft extension was carried with a margin of only one vote; at the 1942 session the teen-age draft bill commanded a majority of 329 votes. All other direct was measures were unanimously adopted.
