Special Focus
In the electoral college there are 531 votes. Of this number a majority, or 266 votes, is required by the constitution for the election of a president and a vice president. If none of the candidates receives the required majority the election is thrown into Congress.
With two months of campaigning still ahead of them, Republican managers are claiming 32 states with 366 electoral votes; Democratic Party managers are claiming 33 states with 382 electoral votes and LaFollette manager's 18 states with 152 electoral votes. More than half the states at present are claimed by two or more of the parties.
Ten states, with a total of 86 electoral votes, are claimed by all three parties. This group includes the important states of California, Indiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Nebraska. |
