How is the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act impacting the number of deficient bridges across the country? From 2000-2008, the percent of bridges that were deficient dropped about 3 percent in total. Since Obama took office, the percentages have dropped further. Crime rates across the US have declined dramatically since 1989 in the highest crime states. Washington DC, Florida and Arizona have seen crime rates cut almost in half over the past 20 years. Tennessee's crime rate has fluctuated more over the past 20 years, and other states have seen less notable decreases. Use the Compare tab to explore crime and economic data correlations.

How To: Create your own table by searching or browsing for a data series and clicking on the View as Table tab underneath the title. Scroll through all available years and see how the data has changed over time, and sort the data by state or ranking by clicking on the corresponding column. The Compare Years tab allows you to put specific years side-by-side as in this visual.
How much does the average smoker "donate" to their state in tobacco taxes each year? Arkansas ranks #15 in tobacco sales tax revenues per capita, collecting almost $100 per capita, which seems high until you know that the #1 ranking state, New Hampshire collects almost $200 per person in tobacco taxes. How to: Check out the detailed state view for any data series by double clicking on any state from the interactive map. To return to the default map view click the Back to Map button in the upper left.
Poverty rates declined or remained steady through 2001, but by 2007, they rose again as the United States entered an economic recession. How did Louisiana or Texas fare in comparison with other states? Create your own line chart to find out.

How to: Create a trend line chart of up to 6 states. Search or browse for a data series, then click on the Compare tab and select the states to compare. You can view the data as a line chart or in a table.
The National Priorities List features known or threatened releases of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants. This scatterplot compares the number of current sites to the number of sites that were eliminated from the list in each state. Minnesota has 25 current sites and 21 that have been removed, as opposed to Illinois which has 50 hazardous waste sites and only 3 that have ever been deleted. How many hazardous waste sites are in your state?

How to: Create your own scatterplot to compare any two data series for a correlation. Search or browse for a data series, and then from the Compare tab, choose Data Series. Use the drop down menus to select what data series you would like to compare and view as a scatterplot or table. Click on a region on the right to highlight states from that region.
Browse by StateExplore trends in a state over time and review key data points including population and land.
Browse by TopicFind all the information available on a particular topic and then dive in to the data.

All of the data in State Stats is also available for download as spreadsheets so you can do whatever you want with it.
To export data simply find what you're interested in, then go to the data series page and choose the export option above the panel. You can export the data for any year you want.
