Help: Browse

The browse features of the CQ Voting and Elections Collection lend editorial structure to the document collection. On the home page, each major component offers one or more browse options. These topics, when clicked, reveal subtopics. At the end of each branch of the browse tree, you can see and sort a list of documents related to the topic.

"By Year" topics and subtopics usually contain all documents that describe a particular year of elections, including election returns at the state and national levels, election analysis, and other key documents such as speeches. These quickly identify the years covered in the Collection and include all relevant information on those elections.

"By State" topics and subtopics focus more narrowly on those documents that cover one particular state only. Most often, the documents here are modern election returns, where the Collection includes detailed data on states.

Campaign and Election Process: Eight campaign and election process topics, including campaign finance, the media, interest groups, Congress, Governors, and President.

Congressional Elections: Congressional election data sorted by House, Senate, year, state, primary election, caucus, district, and more. This feature allows users to find information on specific elections, data on reapportionment and redistricting, biographies of Congress members, and general information on the congressional electoral system. "Analysis By Year" will include election analysis and other key documents that describe a particular congressional election (House and Senate together). "Data By Year" will include election returns data for the House and for the Senate separately; House data here are broken into decades, which cover all state level documents, and into single years, which cover national summaries of the House for that year. "Data by State" will include all election returns data that focus on one particular state only, for the House and the Senate, separately.

Gubernatorial Elections: Data on gubernatorial elections, including information sorted by year, state, and primary election. A history of governors by state and general information on gubernatorial elections can also be found within this browse option.

Political Parties: Documents on the major and minor parities, presidential party leadership, the party system, and party strength.

Presidential Elections: Presidential election data sorted by nominations, primaries and caucuses, state, and year. This browse option also contains biographies of presidents and documents on the Electoral College, Vice Presidency, and presidential election process.

Voters and Demographics: Documents and data on census results, district demographics, partisanship, social groups, voter turnout and demographics, and voting rights.
