Caroline Harrison, the first wife of Benjamin Harrison, complained about people streaming past her sewing room on their way to the president's office. The place was "a circus . . . a show," she said. For more privacy she proposed a separate residence and a couple of remodeling plans, but Congress rejected all three of her schemes.
