Franklin Roosevelt, stricken with polio in 1921, regained partial use of his legs by swimming in the White House pool and the naturally heated waters of Warm Springs, Georgia, where he visited frequently and died in 1945. John Kennedy swam on Harvard's varsity team, an experience that served him well in 1943 after the Japanese sank his patrol torpedo boat.
