It takes more than a Capital Beltway to define the Washington area. In 1992 the federal government lumped the capital and its neighbor to the north into one giant WashingtonBaltimore CMSA (Combined Metropolitan Statistical Area), stretching from Shepherdstown, West Virginia, on the west to Centreville on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
