Wrongful Convictions
Is overhaul of the criminal justice system needed?

Reversals of wrongful convictions in U.S. courts are taking place at a rate of nearly one a week, according to specialists at two Midwestern law schools. In 2009, 67 people were exonerated; in 2010, 52; and in 2011, 40. The numbers come from the first and only online database on wrongful-conviction corrections, the National Registry of Exonerations, launched in May with information on 891 cases dating. . . .
