Continuing Problems; Continued Optimism

Not Only IS this not the best of times for the U.S. nuclear power industry, but it may be the beleaguered industry's worst time. Consider what has happened in the last four months:

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in April that individual states have the power to block construction of new nuclear power plants.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in May levied the largest fine in its eight-year history — $850,000 — on a New Jersey nuclear plant operator for neglecting routine maintenance procedures.

In June the NRC almost closed a nuclear plant 35 miles north of New York City for not having an emergency evacuation plan.

Congress voted in June to cut off government funding for an experimental breeder reactor that ...
