Can opponents of the procedure maintain their momentum?

For abortion opponents, these are heady times. President Trump and many state legislatures have restricted access to the procedure in the past year. The nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, a federal Circuit Court of Appeals judge, to serve on the Supreme Court means Trump will have the chance to cement conservative control of the high court. Court watchers say this could result in the overturning of Roe v. Wade , the landmark decision legalizing abortion. Faced with that prospect, and with congressional elections looming, abortion-rights activists are fighting back by raising money and strengthening grassroots efforts to help Democrats regain control of Congress and with it, the chance to protect abortion rights. A record number of women — many of them abortion-rights advocates — are running for political office in 2018. Conservative groups also are mobilizing and raising money for the November campaign.

On the evening of May 22, 2018, Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List, was smiling broadly. 1 Dannenfelser was introducing, for the first time, a sitting president as the keynote speaker at her group’s annual Campaign for Life Gala in Washington. Money raised would support abortion opponents running for political office.

“President Donald Trump is governing as the most pro-life president in our nation’s history,” said Dannenfelser. He “has diligently and successfully gone about fulfilling his promises to the pro-life voters who worked so hard to elect him, and it has been a privilege to stand with him to defend the innocent unborn.” 2
