Calculating the Cost of the Gulf War

Introduction

By the Bush administration's accounting, the costs of the Persian Gulf War were remarkably low, both in dollars and American lives. Pledges of financial support from America's coalition allies could cover most of the $77 billion the administration estimates the war will cost. But some analysts think the actual cost of the war could run as much as three times that amount. And if the allies' contributions fall short, American taxpayers still could end up paying most of the war-related bills.
