Will the landmark abortion ruling stand?

Introduction

The Right to Life movement's campaign to ban a late-term abortion procedure it dubs “partial-birth abortion” has become the focus of the national debate over abortion. Anti-abortion activists say their goal is to outlaw a particularly grisly abortion method. Abortion-rights activists worry that the debate will turn more Americans against abortion and threaten the constitutional right to choose an abortion guaranteed by the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade. In the coming year, proposed partial-birth bans will be hotly debated. In Congress, the Republican majority will attempt to overturn President Clinton's veto of partial-birth bans. In the states, where several bans have been blocked by courts, anti-abortion activists have vowed to continue the fight to reinstate bans.
