Conflict Over Multicultural Education

Introduction

Many American educators believe that history and social studies must be taught more thoroughly and comprehensively than ever before, with close attention to the rest of the world and to America's own racial and ethnic diversity. Leading the way, California has moved toward implementing an ambitious multicultural curriculum in the state's schools. Some other localities are taking different approaches, and one such approach, called Afrocentrism, worries advocates of multicultural plans like California's. They say Afrocentrism not only distorts the truth and gives too narrow a view of the world, but also will not do what its proponents want—improve the education of inner-city black youths.
